A former British police sergeant is to be extradited from Australia to face more than 20 allegations of sexually assaulting children in Lancashire.

The 76-year-old man was arrested at his home on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast on 10 January over allegations he abused several children between 1960 and 1974.

It is alleged most of the abuse occurred when he lived in Accrington.

Police said he moved to Australia in 2002 after being made aware allegations had been made against him.

He appeared at Brisbane Magistrates’ Court for a brief hearing, where he said he would not fight extradition proceedings instigated by Lancashire Police.

The court was told he would remain at Brisbane’s Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre until the Australian attorney-general, Mark Dreyfus, issues a surrender warrant.

A Lancashire Police spokeswoman said he would be returned to the UK within the next two months.
